hearting

the girl crush. at times inappropriate, it is mostly accepted in all social circles, especially those that are more experimental than others. though it’s become a fad of sorts to say you think so and so girl is sexy (see any celebrity magazine), it’s a dynamic that has been around for a long time, especially in my life.

girl crushes seemingly bloom from envious feelings. i’m often envious of other women’s cheekbones, thin physiques and abilities to afford beautiful clothes that have intimidating price tags (in my eyes). yet these are all superficial characteristics, simply factors that make me think more about these women. i then delve further into an admiration of their creativity.

the women i admire are talented artists. they are versatile in their work and creative enough to make an impact on designers, photographers, writers and lovers of film and music. though i certainly do not consider myself a lesbian (i’m currently cohabitating with my boyfriend of over one year and have never been more content in my life), i do think that my ability to appreciate both sexes is beneficial to my development as a person and fellow artist.

i’ve admired alison mosshart (of the kills and the dead weather) ever since the dead weather’s first album, horehound, turned me into more of a badass than i already was. she’s small, her hair is wild, her fashion sense is inspiring and when she smokes on stage while singing “will there be enough water?” with jack white, i simply forget to blink. her songs are the only songs that get me excited enough to spend money at bars. (this is why i wear so much black.)

The Dead Weather: “Hang You From the Heavens”

The Kills: “U R A Fever”

mila kunis has always been beautiful, even before black swan. as annoying as jackie was in that ’70s show and as orange as she was in forgetting sarah marshall, her eyes remained the same, and therefore she maintained her sex appeal. black swan portrayed kunis in a new light, one that certainly encouraged girl crushes, especially crushes on kunis and her co-star, natalie portman.

i think most girls of my generation would agree that natalie portman is one of the cutest actresses in movies these days. black swan may have portrayed her as an obsessive, girl crushing ballet dancer, but i will always remember her as the angsty teen in anywhere but here, and the naive pregnant girl giving birth in a wal-mart in home is where the heart is (one of my favorite movies ever). the fact that she has dated two of my boy crushes, devendra banhart and jake gyllenhaal, just makes her even more attractive, likable and, obviously, enviable. not to mention, she bears a striking resemblance to audrey hepburn.

all girls, no matter how “cool,” “educated” or “hip” they are, have at one point or another admired audrey hepburn. i’ve never identified with a character as much as i identify with holly golightly of breakfast at tiffany’s. i too have a cat that enjoys parties, and i too am dating a blonde writer-type guy that i snuggle and smoke with. hepburn’s attitude, both on and off screen, was extremely lovable, and she was always flawless. she is the epitome of a movie star, and always will be.

i know of nothing admirable about kate moss, but she takes damn good photos, as can be seen above and in the rest of her hedi slimane photoshoot. she also dated (is dating?) alison mosshart’s partner in the kills, and (omg) supposedly shared a tee with mosshart as well.

(everything always comes full circle.)

though a few have said that they have girl crushes on me, it’s hard to take such statements seriously when they are coated by alcohol. nevertheless i will accept the compliments and continue to admire the women above, as they have, oddly enough, instilled confidence in me and inspired my actions, outfits and attitudes.

(it has become more than evident that i need to stop reading us weekly every time it mysteriously appears in my mailbox.)

(also, for more on my preoccupation with alison mosshart read an old column of mine here.)
